March Newsletter: Using Impact Investing Tools to Respond to Crisis

March 2025 Newsletter

The recent wildfires in Los Angeles have impact investors wondering: "How do we effectively respond to this moment of crisis?" Mission Investors Exchange (MIE) member The California Wellness Foundation is one institution leveraging multiple tools, including grants, program-related investments (PRIs), and mission-related investments (MRIs), to support the people and communities it serves. These investments help fill critical funding gaps, attract additional support, and ensure that recovery efforts are both resilient and community-centered. As Javier Hernandez, Director of Investments, writes, there is much that we as impact investors can do to effectively respond to crises by deploying strategies that can transform disaster recovery into opportunities for sustainable growth and equity.

Hernandez will be joined by several MIE members in conversation at our March Health Investors Gathering: Opportunities for Local Investing after Natural Disasters, which will cover recent emergencies including the wildfires and a hurricane. The gathering will explore how to lead during difficult times, create vehicles for impact investment capital to flow, and collaborate with community members who have a pivotal role in rebuilding.

ICYMI: HBCU Brilliance Initiative

MIE hosted a "Deep Dive on Deals" Feb. 13 highlighting The Kresge Foundation’s investment in the Reinvestment Fund’s HBCU Brilliance Initiative. The HBCU Brilliance Initiative creates opportunities for students, stimulates economic growth, and strengthens the vibrant communities surrounding these institutions. This initiative demonstrates the type of technical and financial support that will position HBCUs to make critical investments in their facilities, financial stability, and long-term growth to better serve their institutional missions. With underwriting standards tailored to the unique needs of these historic institutions, the HBCU Brilliance Initiative serves as flexible capital for the nation’s 109 HBCUs.

This Deep Dive explored Kresge’s unique blended capital approach, investment structure and terms; due diligence and underwriting; challenges, opportunities, and learnings; the importance of the relationship between Reinvestment Fund and Kresge within this deal; and much more.
