MIE’s Health Investors Gathering: Opportunities for Local Investing after Natural Disasters

Join fellow MIE members on Wednesday, March 26, at 2:30 - 3:45 PM ET for a health investors gathering in which we will discuss how foundations and corporations have led and joined efforts to invest for recovery after recent wildfires and a hurricane.

Health conversion foundations, health systems and others concerned with advancing the social determinants of health such as housing, quality jobs creation and access to fresh food are increasingly investing in their local communities. When disaster strikes the needs of the most vulnerable are magnified and those concerned are deploying and encouraging others to deploy not only grants but a variety of impactful financial solutions that can in the long term build sustainable healthy communities for all.

The conversation sparks listed below, whose communities are at different stages of recovery and rebuilding, will participate in an interactive conversation about their efforts to lead during difficult times, create vehicles for impact investment capital to flow, and work alongside community members, who have a determining role in how rebuilding takes place.

Conversation Sparks

  • Andrew Crosson, Invest Appalachia
  • Ashley Lukens, Funder Hui, Hawai’i
  • Debby Kasemeyer, Dogwood Health Trust
  • Javier Hernandez, California Wellness Foundation
Please include your questions and topics you would like to bring from your own experiences in the registration form. Other considerations for our discussion together may include:
  • How can foundations and other mission driven investors identify and alleviate urgent needs beyond grants that must immediately be addressed, such as defeating land grabs from those who are vulnerable?
  • In the mid stages of recovery, how can foundations play a role in creating vehicles for investment that draw in a variety of sources of capital?
  • In the pre- or long term, what can foundations do to support communities’ resiliency?

What to Expect:

Connection: Network with peers, build community and lasting relationships, and exchange valuable insights to drive greater social impact through investments.

Interactive Discussion: Participate in engaging discussions meant to provide a space for MIE members and invited guests to share strategic insights and explore innovative practices in an informal, interactive setting. All participants are encouraged to come prepared to participate, share,  learn, and even have a bit of fun in the process!
