MIE’s Health Investors Gathering: Opportunities for Local Investing after Natural Disasters

Join fellow MIE members on Wednesday, March 26, from 2:30 - 3:45 p.m. ET for a Health Investors Gathering where we’ll explore how foundations and corporations are investing in disaster recovery efforts following recent wildfires and a hurricane.

Health conversion foundations, health systems, and other mission-driven investors concerned with advancing the social determinants of health, such as housing, quality job creation, and access to fresh food, are increasingly investing in their local communities. When disaster strikes, these needs become even more urgent. Leaders in the field are deploying not only grants but also a range of financial solutions to foster long-term, sustainable, and healthy communities.

This interactive discussion will feature Conversation Sparks whose communities are at different stages of recovery and rebuilding. They will describe how they have mobilized during crises, structured vehicles for impact investment capital to flow, and engaged directly with community members to ensure equitable and inclusive rebuilding efforts.

Conversation Sparks

  • Andrew Crosson, Chief Executive Officer, Invest Appalachia
  • Ashley Lukens, Principal Consultant, Funder Hui
  • Debby Kasemeyer, Senior Fellow, Impact & Community Investing, Dogwood Health Trust
  • Javier Hernandez, Director of Investments, The California Wellness Foundation
We encourage you to share your questions and insights on the registration form. Other considerations for our discussion may include:
  • How can foundations and other mission-driven investors address urgent post-disaster needs beyond grants,  such as preventing land grabs that displace vulnerable communities?
  • During mid-stage recovery, how can foundations structure investment vehicles that draw in diverse sources of capital?
  • In the long-term, what can foundations do to support community resilience?

What to Expect:

Connection: Network with peers, build community and lasting relationships, and exchange valuable insights to drive greater social impact through investments.

Interactive Discussion: Participate in engaging discussions meant to provide a space for MIE members and invited guests to share strategic insights and explore innovative practices in an informal, interactive setting. All participants are encouraged to come prepared to participate, share,  learn, and even have a bit of fun in the process!
