MIE’s Family Foundation Gathering: A Family Foundation’s Journey to Unlocking the Entire Endowment

All Mission Investors Exchange (MIE) members are invited to join us for an informal virtual gathering to discuss successes and challenges of committing to a 100% mission-aligned portfolio and activating a new investment policy statement.

This is an interactive call featuring Nicholas Banovetz, Executive Director of Better Way Foundation, who will share how Better Way Foundation committed to 100% mission-aligned investing, including complexities with Board and Investment Committee turnover, piloting new roles and responsibilities, and analyzing how impact investing, grantmaking, perpetuity, and expenses intersect.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Reimagining Opportunities for Investment (ROI) in the South

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) convened a group of prominent investors, including endowments, investment banks, corporations, and individuals, for an initiative known as Reimagining Opportunities for Investment (ROI) in the South. WKKF and its partners produced an investment tour video with the aim of demonstrating how intersecting economic and social shifts are generating prospects for investors focused on making a positive impact across various asset categories. ROI in the South offers in-depth explorations of select sectors and regions to impart valuable insights on navigating investment opportunities in the area. The initiative was named among the recently released 11 trends in philanthropy for 2024 by the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy.

MIE Virtual Learning Opportunity (VLO)
Direct Investing by Philanthropic Investors: How to Responsibly Invest and Exit?

On Feb. 8, MIE members convened to discuss the benefits and challenges of direct investments, from initiation to exit, and responsible strategies to use when exiting. Speakers from the Cleveland Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, and Maycomb Capital shared case examples, lessons from challenges, and best practices. Topics discussed included defining direct investments, the unique challenges of direct investments, community partnership in direct investing, and steps to take throughout the investment process to prepare for a responsible exit.

This VLO revealed valuable insights on how to achieve investment and social return through direct investments while maintaining ethical values for an exit.
