The Mission Investors Exchange (MIE) 2024 National Conference in Los Angeles was a record-setting and vibrant convergence of inspiration and action-oriented ideas for over 700 impact investors. Across three days, participants at MIE’s largest convening ever engaged deeply with thought leaders and innovative initiatives aimed at deploying more philanthropic capital for social and environmental good. From LA Mayor Karen Bass's impassioned call to tackle homelessness through the LA4LA partnership to filmmaker Ava DuVernay's stirring closing remarks on the power of leveraging impact investing for narrative change, the Conference underscored the vital role of bold, intersectional approaches to address pressing global challenges.
Other highlights included The California Endowment’s President & CEO Dr. Robert K. Ross advocating for comprehensive endowment strategies and Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s President & CEO Nicole Taylor promoting starting investment journeys with Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). Speakers like Flozell Daniels, Jr., CEO of the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, and Jahi Wise, senior advisor to the administrator, Environmental Protection Agency, emphasized the importance of centering people and institutions in climate action and risk management discussions. The plenary sessions and breakouts covered a breadth of topics, from equity and democracy to food systems and artificial intelligence, highlighting the diverse avenues through which impact investing can drive societal transformation.
As attendees return to their communities, they carry with them new insights and strengthened networks. We hope the Conference will continue to be a catalyst for future collaborations and innovative solutions, reminding us that the work of impact investing is ongoing and ever-evolving. As MIE President & CEO Matt Onek noted, the connections and strategies fostered here will resonate far beyond LA, propelling the mission of creating a more just and sustainable world.
