Just like Living Cities’ programmatic focus has become more explicit on naming race/racism as the root cause for our country’s socioeconomic disparities, the Blended Catalyst Fund – a $36 million impact investing debt fund that tests innovative approaches to solving urban problems – investment thesis has also evolved.
For the past year, Living Cities investment work and, most importantly, its investment team, has gone from committing to closing racial income and wealth gaps to becoming increasingly clear and explicit about “how” they're implementing this commitment. Living Cities relies on transformative, cross-sector partnerships to achieve their impact objectives and will use this Virtual Learning Opportunity to engage with MIE members to share:
- Why a racial equity lens is necessary in impact investing.
- What kinds of transactions we are looking for and why.
- What questions we ask ourselves in order to build pipeline and vet potential investments that align with our impact thesis.
- How we are building our own racial equity capacities by attending trainings and workshops, and understanding/challenging our own biases.
- How we are working to develop a “culturally sensitive” underwriting process that acknowledges barriers that entrepreneurs and fund managers of color face when attempting to access and deploy capital.
