How Impact Investing Can Help Solve the Affordable Housing Crisis
From the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision on homelessness to the chronic race-based gap in home ownership and capital access, the housing crisis persists as one of our country’s most pressing social and economic issues. Systemic and sustainable solutions are needed, and impact investing is one tool communities can use to address the lack of affordable and available homes. In October 2024, Mission Investors Exchange (MIE) highlighted conversations and resources about impact investing’s role in catalyzing and scaling affordable-housing solutions.
This Virtual Learning Opportunity (VLO) focused on challenges and untapped opportunities in affordable housing investing. Speakers discussed strategies for taking a systems-level approach to transforming housing ecosystems and shared actionable tools for sourcing high-potential investments. This conversation explored possible deal structures and best practices for investing in affordable housing.
Speakers included:
-
Susan K. Thomas, President, Melville Charitable Trust
-
Omar Carrillo Tinajero, Director, Programs, Center for Community Investment
-
Katheryn Witt, Director, Program Content, MIE
This VLO was followed by a Deep Dive on Deals Oct. 17 focusing on due diligence strategies.
