CDFI Bank Industry Numbers

National Community Investment Fund (NCIF) is a nonprofit private equity trust fund created in 1996 to capitalize and strengthen the mission-oriented banking sector. NCIF’s research and Social Performance Metrics communicate the transformative impact mission-oriented financial institutions have in low-income communities.

According to NCIF's Social Performance Metrics, as of June 30, 2017, the number of CDFI banks increased to 139 from 123 in 2016. In conjunction with sector growth, CDFI banks continued their historic trend of supporting low-and moderate-income (LMI) communities, with a median of 80% of branches located in such communities. CDFI bank presence coupled with growth illustrates sustained community impact in LMI communities nationwide.
