April 2024: Counting Down to the 2024 National Conference and Reflecting on our C3 Webinar

The Mission Investors Exchange (MIE) 2024 National Conference is just weeks away! This year’s Conference will once again bring together a who’s who in philanthropy, impact investing, and the broader ecosystem. Our main stage sessions will feature foundation presidents such as La June Montgomery Tabron of W.K. Kellogg Foundation, John Palfrey of John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Tonya Allen of McKnight Foundation, and Nicole Taylor of Silicon Valley Community Foundation. We will also have private sector leaders including Mellody Hobson, co-CEO and president of Ariel Investments, and Jay Brown, co-founder and vice chairman of Roc Nation and co-founder of Marcy Venture Partners. A special discussion “Empowering Change in Hollywood Through Impact Investing” will feature award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay speaking about the innovative model that financed her most recent film, “Origin.”

Attendees will tour several Impact in Action sites including Everytable, a social enterprise whose mission is to make fresh, nutritious meals affordable for everyone; Genesis LA, one of the city’s largest community development financial institutions; the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator, recognized as one of the most innovative business incubators in the world; and Slauson & Co., a Black-owned, LA-based early stage venture capital firm rooted in economic inclusion and backed by some of the world's most influential tech companies.

MIE Webinar Recap: Maximizing Catalytic Capital’s Leveraging Power

Mission Investors Exchange (MIE) partnered with Catalytic Capital Consortium (C3) in March 2024 for a virtual learning opportunity to discuss how foundations and other asset owners can maximize the power of their catalytic capital. Showcasing findings from four U.S.-focused research projects that were supported by C3, panel experts shared key considerations and lessons learned from their recent research efforts. This body of work strengthens the evidence base on catalytic capital and focuses on answering questions such as when and how catalytic capital is needed, what role it plays, and the kind of results and impact it can help create. Catalytic capital is defined as patient, risk-tolerant, or concessionary capital that often helps attract additional investors to a project. The webinar drew out action-oriented findings and concluded with identifying best practices for investors.

Joined by Joshua Sledge from the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, Cynthia Muller from W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Dana Linnane from the Governor's Office of the Foundation Liaison, State of Michigan, and Travis Green from  Community Investment Project, this gathering focused on what an impact investing reset looked like for Kalamazoo Community Foundation, what it can look like for your foundation, and how community foundations can attract additional public dollars to their communities. The discussion highlighted the importance of leveraging community foundations to understand real-time community needs, and speakers shared how collaborations between foundations and government entities have proven instrumental in addressing barriers and leveraging capital effectively.
