Arnold Ventures is a philanthropy working to improve the lives of all Americans by pursuing evidence-based solutions to our nation’s most pressing problems. We fund research to better understand the root causes of broken systems that limit opportunity and create injustice. Our focus areas include Criminal Justice, Higher Education, Health, and Public Finance. In each area, we advocate for policy reforms that will lead to lasting, scalable change. Founded in 2010 by Laura and John Arnold, the mission of Arnold Ventures is to maximize opportunity and minimize injustice. We are a team of more than 100 subject-matter experts headquartered in Houston with offices in New York and Washington, D.C. Arnold Ventures manages the giving for various Arnold entities, including the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, Action Now Initiative, and the Arnolds’ donor-advised fund.

The Educational Foundation of America is a family foundation that envisions a society in which every person has a meaningful voice in an inclusive democracy, with unrestricted access to full reproductive freedom, and lives in creative, thriving communities on a healthy, regenerative planet. We are a proud leader in the impact investing movement. In the early 90s, EFA was one of the first private foundations to begin screening its investments using Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria to guarantee those investments aligned with our core values. Building on our commitment to ensure that our portfolio supports, rather than dilutes, our grantmaking goals, our investments became 100% fossil-fuel free in 2015. That year EFA was also one of the original signatories to the Divest-Invest Movement, actively avoiding fossil fuel investments and instead seeking out forward-thinking companies leading the clean energy revolution. Our assets have grown as a result of this strategic shift. Furthermore, we are engaged shareholders. By owning shares in public companies, EFA is able to raise environmental, social, and corporate governance issues with management. We do this through productive dialogue or by filing shareholder resolutions.

To build a better Southern California by supporting nonprofit organizations to more effectively serve the underserved. In order to achieve this mission and advance equity, the Foundation will use a number of different strategies: Provide grants and other support designed to improve the capacity and effectiveness of nonprofit organizations working in the areas of health, human services, and education for people and communities who currently face the most obstacles to opportunity. Give highest priority to organizations working to provide greater access, resources, and opportunities in low-income communities, including for those whose race, gender, immigration status, disability, age, sexual orientation, or zip code has prevented them from realizing the dignities and liberties all people deserve. Through our responsive and initiative grantmaking, focus greater attention on critical issues that are associated with the growing imbalance of opportunity in Southern California, including: child welfare, immigrant integration, workforce development, re-entry, homelessness, youth development, and public education. Exercise leadership on issues that strengthen and support the ability of nonprofit organizations to achieve their missions and desired outcomes. This includes advocating for programs, policies, and services that address the needs of communities most lacking in opportunity and access.
